  • DESCRIPTION

These stunning and highly-unusual dinning chairs were designed by Umberto Mascagni of Bologna, Italy, 1952. I. Barget, Ltd., London ( "Distinctive Italian Furniture and Kitchen Design" ) were the exclusive importers for this range. The furniture line exclusively retailed through Harrods, London throughout the 1950s. These are rare on a worldwide platform. The six chairs have high oval backs and cyma curved seats upholstered in cream-white vinyl with black edging. The conical wooden legs are also wrapped in textured black SKAI with a vertical inlaid brass-toned aluminium trim runs down the legs. The feet are covered in brass caps. Overall in a good vintage condition, with some wear consistent with age and use, preserving a patina. These are not only glamorous but classy and refined in appearance and a very intelligent piece of design.

Mascagni became known for his innovative use of new materials in furniture designs which were considered provocative in the post-war decade. In 1952, he created a new line of furniture using materials such as "SKAI" (PVC) upholstery, brass-toned aluminum, anodized aluminum frame and aluminum piping.
